George Building Collapse: Key Failures Revealed

An independent investigation into the tragic George building collapse - which claimed 34 lives in May 2024 - has exposed systemic failures at multiple levels of construction oversight and project management.

Key Findings:

Regulatory Failures: The NHBRC and project officials failed to enforce compliance, with irregular registration and enrolment of the contractor.
OHS Violations: Critical safety lapses, lack of enforcement, and the resignation of the safety consultant highlighted poor adherence to occupational health and safety protocols.
Inspection Gaps: Inspections were late, incomplete, and sometimes conducted before units were even built.
Unqualified Personnel: Several individuals lacked required engineering or surveying credentials. The appointed technical manager's skills were not properly vetted.
Construction Started Without Plan Approval: The George Municipality approved the building plans after construction had begun.

Recommendations:

The report calls for a major overhaul of the NHBRC's systems:

Clear certification for building types
Independent peer reviews for high-risk projects
Skills audits for inspectors
Strict controls on login credentials and on-site management

Officials involved face charges ranging from negligence to dishonesty.
